Encinitas Streetscape Phase 1

The HWY 101 streetscape in Encinitas is the urban renewal project that combines drainage and grading improvements to the road infrastructure with new design elements that have greatly reinforced the social, pedestrian and leisure environment of this coastal city. IVY served as the Landscape Architect responsible for concept refinement, design development and construction documentation for all landscape elements. IVY led a team of structural and electrical engineers and coordinated all work through daily on-site visits during the construction phase. The primary landscape elements include a series of decorative and finished ‘landscape objects’ that reinforce the high quality of the pedestrian experiences. These include retaining walls with natural stone facing, safety decorative guardrails, a stone and wood overlook, a small park with native plantings and decorative pavement medallions. Other standard elements coupled with street improvements include planted and lit traffic pop-outs, custom cast iron tree grates and custom-designed stone, steel and concrete seating areas.

The concept for the general design originated from infrastructural requirements, including pedestrian and vehicular safety and adequate surface drainage. IVY brought a high-quality sensory driven approach to the look and feel of all improvements in order to provide an urbane setting that reinforces the City’s relaxed atmosphere. A great deal of thought and consideration entered the process for the design of all construction details. This has resulted in a unified impression of solidity, care and overall high quality in the perception of Downtown Encinitas.
